WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
“Is Singapore part of China?” A question that usually follows when I reveal the roots of my accent when meeting people in other countries.
And in all honesty, I used to be very conscious of my accent when compared to the more “refined” sounds of westerners. I would cringed hearing the ‘lehs’, ‘lahs’, and ‘mehs’ of Singlish; a colloquial form of English unique to my home country of Singapore in Southeast Asia. |
Having lived in Oklahoma for over two decades, I have weaned myself off that pattern of speech so that Americans can understand me despite my accent.
On the other hand, several southern slangs have also crept into my speech, triggering strange looks when I unconsciously used ‘y’all’ and ‘fixin’ to’ when speaking with my friends in other parts of the world. |
HELLO, I AM AN OKIEPOREAN |
‘Okieporean’ is an unofficial title bestowed upon me by a friend, describing quite perfectly my nationality (ie. a Singaporean) and my current residential status (ie. Oklahoman). It is a reminder of my roots, past and present, as I straddle between these two very distinct worlds.
The losing of one speech pattern and gaining of another is deep down a desire of mine to assimilate. As individuals, we desire to be accepted by people we see day to day. We all want to be remembered for something (and something good I hope). What people remember about us is what I refer to as our Personal Brand in the book.
Growing up, my parents did their best to make sure my brother and I have food on the table, roof over our heads, and education to keep us out of trouble. As a latchkey kid of working class parents, I had to be realistic with what I am interest in (ie. graphic design) and what my parents can afford. Since design school was beyond our reach, I took the route of learning the skills through library books and any free online videos.
It took me about seven years by the time I received a paycheck as a legit self-taught graphic designer. While the journey getting there sounded like a long time, juggling between ways to learn the skills and opportunities to put into practice fueled my passion. Defining the Business Brand, which is the other topic discussed in my book, became the foundation to my method of delivering brand-driven design solutions.
Working within different companies as an in-house marketing professional has deepened my conviction of the need to first understand the personal brands of business owner and decision maker. The latter's ability to lead and inspire the people within their company towards growth and success stems from their awareness of their personal goals and values. Personal and business brands are thus, two strands in the same cord.
'You have to go deep in order to go far' became my mantra as I believe a powerful brand starts from within. As Simon Sinek puts it, “People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it." Whether you are a solopreneur or a small business owner with employees, understanding your personal brand is the foundation for developing a memorable business brand.

I cannot say enough about how helpful Vincent Lee's B.R.A.N.D. system has been for me and my business. I had some good ideas about the message I wanted to communicate about why I was in business, but on my own I was unable to craft a cohesive, comprehensive message. His system has given me a road map allowing me to consistently communicate my core values and the benefits of my business. I and my team are now able to firmly grasp the concept of "what we are in the business of selling." I am seeing the positive effects of this clarity both with our team and our customers.
